I’m finally getting out of my “dis”comfort zone and writing a blog. Why so intimidated to get my voice out there? Not sure. Fear of others’ disapproval or disagreement? I’m not one to encourage confrontation. It’s not pleasant for me.

Fear of Confrontation

That’s not to say I have never had disagreements. In fact, in a recent conversation with one of my life coaching friends, I revisited an argument that I had with my mom during my teenage years. I’m not even sure of the topic, but I recalled that my grandmother, who was visiting, actually became physically ill as a result. Wow - that really affected me. I felt horrible. Now that’s a real distaste for conflict. My grandma was one of the most peaceful people I ever knew. Rather than engage in conflict, she would say things like, “In a way I think we’re both right.” I felt her love in everything she did – whether it was baking cookies and pies, sewing, crocheting, playing cards or just being present with me. Perhaps, I learned to “avoid confrontation” from my grandma’s loving and peaceful nature. However, I shouldn’t ignore any element that is based in my own fear, especially since that is the emotion that came to the surface. If so, there’s something more for me to explore and heal.

Exploring Our Fearful and Angry Thoughts

With that in mind, perhaps it is a good time for those of us who are experiencing tension about world and national events, including our recent election, to delve a little deeper within ourselves to elicit the emotion that surfaces. Is it fear or anger? Sit with your angry or fearful thought for a minute. Meditate on it. Pray if you’d like. Share this thought with someone you trust, a close friend or coach who will explore it further with you.

Bringing Peace Locally and Globally

If you subscribe to the concept, “think globally, act locally,” you really must start with yourself. That way, we will bring our best, peaceful selves out in our neighborhoods, communities and nation. Give it a try. If nothing else, you’ll be happier as a result.
